I guess this compound occurs in our bodies naturally but it’s also found in “kidney, heart and liver meats as well as spinach, broccoli and potatoes.”

.

I only found two sources so far (forums, websites, nothing official) of people claiming they lost hair after taking Large doses of lipoic acid as a supplement. They also mentioned biotin helped them reverse the process.

.

Heres the links:

.

.

What do you guys think? Maybe these guys just had a “shed”? I was researching this supplement for possible health/hair benefits and wondering if its safe to use at low doses and most likely with B vitamin supplementation.

.

edit: Oh, wow theres over 350 results when I search for lipoic acid on this forum. Guess I should have searched before posting this =/

“They also mentioned biotin helped them reverse the process”

The answer is right there.

backspace – I concur with Jacob. I’ve personally been using Lipoic acid for several years, in fact the stronger kind stabilized R-Lipoic acid.

Biotin is critical, because without it, chronic use of lipoic acid will eventually lead to hair loss. That said, I’ve been taking copious amounts of Biotin everyday. Usually a 5000 micrograms or more.

…not only that – biotin is often coupled with ALA in dietary supplements.

As far as my own “statistic” research go – alpha lipoic acid is one of the most substantially supported supplement for health and longevity.

Q: any of you know why it requires so much biotin, and how it is related to hair?
(I only found support for hair benefit via improving general health and suppressing stress… any other fronts?)

Personally, I take ALA (not the R fraction) 300mg with every meal and 5mg biotin every day.

That sounds like a crazy amount of ALA but then again I still don’t know much about it.

Heres an interesting study about the effects of ALA in cream form:

“It is indicated that 12 weeks of treatment with a cream containing 5% LA improves clinical characteristics related to photoageing of facial skin.”

If you read further into the ALA / hair topic on some of those other forums, you’ll see some swearing that taking biotin with ALA *DIDN’T* stop their hair from falling out.

I wrote elsewhere how I suspected some of the anti-aging supplements I was taking (other than ALA) was causing a sudden hairloss.

For instance, the A-L-Carnitine coupled with ALA in fomulas: it can produce more testosterone and was implicated by one post in some wayward inflammation pathway that could effect the scalp.

There is nothing conclusive here yet, but I’ve cut way back on my use of (R)ALA/ALA, despite all the other positive things I’ve noticed using it.

Well I use Swanson’s Carnosine Plus – 3 pills daily to give me 1gram of AL-Carnitine, 500mg of L-Carnosine, 150mg of ALA and 1.5mg of Biotin. (Perhaps more is needed?)

I also use 2 X 300mg of ALA and a single 100mg (R)ALA.

I do the Cod Liver Oil and EK as well as per ImmortalHair’s regime.

I also take 1 Saw Palmetto pill per day.

I notice my libido has increased to almost pre-Propecia levels in 1999 and my hair looked good and stable, but only recently, 2-3 days ago seems not as good as before, but that could have been due to a beer binge on Friday night!

I’m happy for getting rid of Propecia’s diabolical side effects.

A cause for concern is I also take 14 Swanson’s Longevital pills daily and they contain 200mcg of selenium, which together with the Carnosine Plus, makes 250mcg of supplemental selenium I take. This has recently made the news as making one’s hair fall out.

I welcome your thoughts on this regime of mine.

You are really pumping up the ALA. I will be interested in what you notice about your hair on it over the next few months.

Others online, and in person, have said ALA just makes them too wired or irritable. Though I usually felt quite energized on it.

FWIW, I once wrote the ask-a-doc guy at the ALA/ALC Juvenon site about balding occuring and he (of course) wrote back that he never heard of such.

I had noticed recently that a little ALA occasionally did seem to correlate to somewhat more frequent “occurances.” :-) . Occurances which have been far less frequent with age, (and my increasing use of prostate and hair nostrums – even before Propecia).

Sadly, it seems the only choices out there for me these days are being a healthy, well-maned ,subdued guy, or a dynamic, randier, balding guy who needs to run to the bathroom every 15 minutes!
