Hair Loss Product: Headway 5 Review

By John Ertel
February 1, 1999

Rogaine 5% bottle

Headway 5
Pros:
  • Consistent, high quality formula
  • Available over the counter in some countries and mail order in others
  • Two applicators (mist spray and nozzle spray)
  • Lower price than importing Regaine 5
Cons:
  • Only available from overseas
  • Generic pricing (about 25% cheaper than Regaine 5)
  • Not available with Retin-A combination or in combination with other treatments
  • Will cost more than Rogaine Extra Strength when it becomes available in January

Headway 5 is a generic version of Upjohn's Regaine 5.  I was sent a sample to evaluate by a New Zealand pharmacy.  As far as I can tell, there is no difference between the Headway and Regaine formulas.  To my knowledge, they both have the same consistency, smell, look and feel.  It is not uncommon for brand name companies to produce and sell their product to another company for sale as a generic, so it's possible that this is what's happening here, although I can't say that for sure.  The bottom line is that I can't see any difference between buying this formula and Upjohn's except this formula is about $10 per bottle cheaper than the Upjohn Regaine formula from New Zealand.

Pricing Around $20-25 per bottle.
Available You can order it from New Zealand where it has already been approved for over the counter sale.  The following web sites will ship to the US:

Hair2Go (About $20-25)
Pharmacy Geoff (New Zealand)
