A high profile hair replacement company in New Jersey is coming under scrutiny by the local media and law enforcement. The local news channel TV10 in the Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey area will be broadcasting an expose on Thursday night, 1/21/99, on the New Jersey hair replacement center. Officials are investigating Voorhees, New Jersey-based United Micro Systems, a company that offers "permanent" non-surgical solutions to hair loss. At issue is whether their solutions are permanent and whether United Micro Systems is falsely advertising their product. According to Max Gayer of Philadelphia's Gayerhair, Inc., the product offered by United Micro Systems is not only not permanent, it is a widely used product offered by many reputable companies across the country who don't falsely advertise it to be more than it is. According to Gayer, the system is "an ultra-light poly base that is glued to the head with a medical adhesive.. monthly it would have to be taken off cleaned and put back on, repaired, whatever." Gayer will also be providing commentary for TV10's piece on UMS tonight at 11. False advertising is not the only issue here. According to Gayer and others who have contacted Regrowth, so is cost. The dermal retention systems at United Micro Systems can cost anywhere from $3,000 - $8,000 and would require additional monthly maintenance. Many people fly in from around the country to get "dermal retention" only to go home with a new hair system which cost them several thousand dollars. Gayer indicates that many hair replacement companies offer this product without irresponsible advertising or pricing. Gayer offers a similar product for around $2,000 per year including monthly servicing at his establishment. While he acknowledges that others in the industry may charge more than he does, he points out that none charge as much United Micro Systems. content2 |
